Do You Believe?

I’m a skeptic. I always have been and I’m quite sure I always will be. I never believe anything unless it is proven by science. There are plenty of things I would like to be true: unicorns, ghosts, the Loch Ness monster, and aliens to name a few. But what I find most fascinating is what others’ choose to believe in. How does one find faith in the most unlikely of ideas? And how do you keep your faith when there are so many facts that seem to disprove that in which you believe?

Last year, I made my first visit to a psychic, which you can read about here. I was in Miami, the psychic sign decorated with zodiac signs and palms in a cracked window pane seemed to be calling my friend and I’s names and the timing was right. I got a palm reading and listened to the gypsy-esque older woman babble on about how I am a nice person with a good soul, I should’ve realized at that exact moment she was full of shit. But she continued on, telling me boyfriend would propose to me in 3 months (this was last August!) and that I would own my own business and have great success. I’ll admit I was hopeful, she told me nothing bad. She even told me I’d live to be 83…which would give me plenty of time to work on my bucket list. But I can no longer find her credible since not one of those items has happened.

I would love to believe in psychics having the ability to see into one’s future and help us to see our pathes in life a little clearer, but this is case and point why I don’t. I don’t believe in the vague horoscopes either. But it would be nice to know a month in advance what days are going to be “bad”… Just like I only read fortune cookies with the intention of adding “in bed” to the end of everything they say.

Just like I’m not out running around naked and spending all my money right now because some crazy person says the world is ending at 6PM, as much as I’d like to have an excuse to do so.

Do you believe in psychics or anything paranormal?

I believe in ghosts but I'm not sure that I believe in psychics — unless it's just incredibly difficult to find a legit one I don't know.

This was a very thought-provoking post! Cheers to the world not ending today!

If I let myself…I have a hard time believing anything, even science. I always think to myself, 'what if someone else had discovered this? Viewed it differently? Named it something else?' Even science seems like it could so easily have been a step different.

That being said, I totally believe in ghosts. My head might not be screwed on right.

You know what i find interesting about psychics, is that if they really could tell the future, why are they not wining the lottery ? And if even you say none of those things happened, and she said they would. Then obviously its all bull right ? Well for my point of view, i don't believe psychics can tell the future. But thats just me. I believe in God and his word, the bible. (:

This post cracked me up! I can't wait to eat Chinese so I can add “in bed” after my fortune, I've never heard of that.

I kind of believe in ghosts and I would like to believe there are life forms on other planets but who knows!?

  5. To be honest. I am not religious at all. AT ALL. Although I think there is someone higher than us, who's got our fate planned out. If we die tomorrow there was probably a reason. The whole palm/taro reading is kind if whack to me. Who are they to tell me what's going to happen. Or tell me there is a friend I am having issues with. DUH, I know….I will go to that friend bc I will know it and say “HEY WTF is up”… also if I was having issues how about going to someone who is COLLEGE educated like a psych, they will be unbiased and will totally hear about your problems and work out solutions with you. Just my take on it, gurrrlll.

    Love your blog.

  6. I find no harm in psychics or horoscopes, as long as people take them like you do, as fun, not serious guidance. I don't believe in them either, but that doesn't mean that I don't read my horoscope in the paper every morning 😉 Hey, if they are right, it can't hurt to know what all I can expect that day!

This post reminded me of some guys I saw on a tv talk show once. These two were brothers and saw the same psychic right after the other. She was going on about family members and sisters and had no idea that they were brothers or even related.

  9. I had my palm read/tarot reading a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. I totally took it as entertainment and I didn't think she said anything that wasn't just really vague and could be applied almost anything. The one thing that did impress me was when she did the tarot reading for my brother, she correctly guessed that he had recently been married and I didn't give her any clues to know that.

I fully believe in the paranormal and such. But like everything else — there are people involved who are less than credible who ruin it for those who are. I have had several readings — some were SCARY dead on — and some just like you describe.
I also believe in ghosts and that we all have connections to those we have lost — if we allow ourselves to be.
I believe in aliens — dont even get me going on this subject!
And horoscopes are hit and miss — but I believe we are connected to the universe more than we know!
I think its like anything — you get out of it what you put into it. We control our destiny!

    Great post!
